This feels remarkably well written and persuasive. Think you’ve changed my opinion towards EA-on-the-sleeve-ism

Love to hear that, Joey. Swim against the vibe (if the vibe lacks justification)!

Really appreciated the sequence thinking and reflection on how a new wave may take it further. Movements should be proud of where they came from and the people who drove them there, but not to the exclusion of new resources (people, networks, scope) that further the central mission.

What got us here, won’t get you there. The rearview mirror is tiny and the windshield, immense.

In its current iteration, EA will face an existential threat at least as severe as FTX. Either the AI bubble will pop or AI will rapidly replace jobs. Both will seriously mess up the economy. Furthermore, the average American and indeed the average journalist don't clearly distinguish between the tribes of the Bay. Altman, Amodei, and the venture capitalists will be equally vilified by the press. Look, people are already saying that Claude targeted civilians in Iran (not saying this is false; I just wanted to demonstrate the overall sentiment towards AI companies).

The more emphasis that EA puts on AI, the more it's tying itself to AI's inevitable catastrophic impacts. I don't think EA will die even after AI jolts the economy, but there will definitely be a more organized opposition. https://fessus.substack.com/p/if-enlightenment-philosophy-is-earationalism goes into more detail.

So if EA doesn't wanted to be universally hated, it should start making itself great at once.

Hi, I'm so glad someone is talking about these subjects. I've got some ideas about what kind of person I want to be. I want to be seen, to be given credit for who I am, and not be judged by what others won't understand about me. I want to trust my inner compass, and follow it.
